A painting and a photograph connect two journeys
A collaborative painting from 1947 and a Bali photograph from 1952 place Luo Ming within two often separately narrated histories.

In Autumn Birds, made in 1947, Wang Lanruo painted the rocks, Luo Ming the birds, and Guan Shanyue completed and inscribed the work. Five years later, Luo appears in a photograph of artists gathered in Bali during the journey associated with Chen Wen Hsi, Liu Kang, Cheong Soo Pieng and Chen Chong Swee.
Hu Chao’s curatorial research brings the painting and the photograph into the same account. Luo’s presence connects artists travelling from China with artists based in Singapore, while their shared educational and regional ties reveal how such encounters became possible. The works and documents give a material basis for reading these journeys as parts of an overlapping network.
